Another question for you: Are you a chicken or an eagle?
I’m being serious right now. If we are ever going to live out God’s elite purposes for our lives, we first have to figure out who we think we are. Because our beliefs about ourselves—about our worth, what we are capable of—can hold us back. If you believe, for example, that your life’s meaning is found in a number on the scale, or a particular guy’s attention, or entrance into the social group of your dreams, you have a low view of your purpose and potential. (You know by now I had a terribly low view of my own purpose for years.) If you believe you are a chicken, you behave accordingly.
Many of us were brought up with a limited understanding of our potential. I was. I thought my goal in life was to be skinnier, prettier, more something in order to feel accepted and lovable. This pursuit left me empty and exhausted, pining for significance.
Our beliefs can also propel us forward into our purpose, designed before the sun and moon were placed in the sky! This is eagle living, and it’s a true high.
A friend once told me the story below and it clicked with me that we too often settle and live beneath what God has created us for. It’s time to ask yourself, “What do I believe about myself?”
“A man found an eagle’s egg and put it in the nest of a barnyard hen. The eagle hatched with a brood of chicks and grew up with them. All his life the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did, thinking he was a barnyard chick. He scratched the earth for worms and insects, he clucked and cackled. And he would thrash his wings and fly a few feet in the air. Years passed and the eagle grew very old. One day he saw a magnificent bird above him in the cloudless sky. It glided in graceful majesty among the powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings. The eagle looked up in awe. ‘Who’s that?’ he asked.
“‘That’s the eagle, the king of the birds,’ said his neighbor. ‘He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth—we are chickens.’ So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that’s what he thought he was.”14
Do you belong to the earth or to the sky? Do you believe you were designed to scratch for grubs in the dirt or take your rightful place at your Father’s banqueting table? Are there any ways that you see yourself as a barnyard chicken and are not aware of your potential grandeur? You could soar like an eagle. What would that look like for you? But first you have to be who you are already. You must believe in your life’s purpose, that God crafted you in particular for extraordinary influence. You have to be certain that God intended you to fly on strong, golden wings. Do you believe that?
My senior year in high school was the first time I heard the term plus model on my favorite TV show.
